Five people died early yesterday morning when a medical emergency aircraft crashed into the southwest face of Otay Mountain, about two miles east of Brown Field, authorities said.
The victims were employees of Med Flight Air Ambulance Inc., based in Albuquerque, N.M.
They were identified as pilot Karl A. Kolb, 56, of Albuquerque; co-pilot K. John Lamphere, 30, of Albuquerque; paramedic Marco E. Villalobos, 33, of El Paso, Texas; nurse Laura A. Womble, 47; and Womble's paramedic husband, Donald L. Womble, 45, of Albuquerque.
The crew had picked up a San Diego-area resident who had become ill in Mexico and transported him to Brown Field, said Brian Lax, a spokesman with Med Flight Air Ambulance. Lax declined to identify the patient or where the person was taken.
