    transitioning from EMT to Medic

I can only attest to the differences between a basic and a medic course. Or rather, what life is like when you're enrolled in a good medic program. I'm a little more than half way through the 13 month long program. And I LOVE it. It's very hard work, it's constant studying, constant review...

What is the difference between a "protocol" and a "standing order

Ridryder is such a legend in my medic class that I'm actually printing this out to take to my next class. Yes, I'm a geek.

What is the difference between a "protocol" and a "standing order

Standing Order: treatments you can perform before contacting the medical control physician for permission. Protocol: Standard that includes general and specific principles for managing certain patient conditions. I'm sure there's an easier way to explain it, that's straight out of my...

A couple questions about course material

I recommend the Kaplan book as a great review book... Just make sure that whatever book you choose it has the updated guidelines for CPR. I just spent 40 bucks on a Medic review book that has old guidelines in it for ACLS. Good luck to you :) April

"Onward & Upward"-- now that I've passed...

Congrats!!!! Congrats on passing, I remember what a load off of my shoulders that was... And how exciting :) Everyone has offered excellent advice... Here's something I haven't seen, but I've encountered as a new EMT. Just because some of your counterparts cut corners does not mean you...

    Bad day at work

Apparently this medic has not only a twin but a triplet... It's amazing how long 24 hours can last when partnered up with these people. HELLO, I realize I'm new. I'm green. I'm a little nervous... But I'm trying. These people forget what it feels like to be new. Everyone was new once...

    A good life.

I'm so happy for you :) I'm in a very similiar position. Up until recently, I was a computer geek. As of March, I'm an EMT. Not just someone who passed NR, but an actual honest to god, gainfully employed EMT. That being said, I know I'm an excited newbie... I'm doing my best to not be...

    Time to Brag - Certifications

I think I should get the vote for least qualifications :) Of course I'm technically not even employed yet (I just got a phone call that I go next Wednesday to get fingerprinted and drug tested). I guess we were all at this point at some time, right? NREMT-B AHA Healthcare Professional...

    Ambulance serves morbidly obese

I would say it's more accurate to say "they don't always advertise the seriousness...." My surgeon put me through a battery of tests, including a psych consult prior to surgery... He told me of the side effects, as well as the chance that I could die. I could die... I could die... Wow...

    Omg

I was up until two am, and I had to get up with two little ones at six this morning. *groan* I've heard the same thing about the blood work, fingerprinting and physicals with my company too... A friend of mine from my EMT class was hired in the week before me and she had to run around too...

Gym told to pay $619,650 in man's death because it didn't have a defibrillator

My gym doesn't have an AED either... And I'm pretty sure they don't have any EMS personnel on hand. A while back there was an article in the local paper about how many businesses don't want AED's because they're expensive, they don't want to have to train their staff on them, and they don't...

    Ambulance serves morbidly obese

A lot of the people around me, supposed friends and some family members, some of which have weight issues... Think of Gastric Bypass as the "easy way out". It's everything but that. I didn't eat solid foods for seven weeks. I should have used quotes in my last post when I said what I...
