Medics what happens when you don't know the treatment

I have been a basic for over 10 years now in a very rural area where ALS is a dream not a reality on most days in our county. I have worked numerous codes with just a driver and only getting ALS backup 2 minutes out from the hospital. It is hard when we get a new intermediate or medic that was...

    Self protection question

As an educator at the Maine Criminal Justice academy said in a class about when to shoot your weapon ( I would rather be tried by twelve people than carried by six people)

    WEMT v. WALS

Maine protocols give basic emt's the ability to do spinal rule out. Wilderness emt protocols in Maine are specific and they automatically can be used if time to get the patient to the hospital is more or less 2 hours.

    WEMT v. WALS

I may stand corrected that it is a certification. but we have a wilderness protocol book that kicks in when a hospital is more or less than a 2 hr transport or extrication ie wilderness or complicated extrication from a vehicle. If I can figure out the way for private msg here I will scan it and...

    WEMT v. WALS

Depends on the states protocols. In Maine WEMT has benefits, such as reducing dislocations of shoulders, knees(patellas) and ankles. WALS has a great deal of more drugs available. We are lucky in my rural area that our medical director believes in and helped set up the WEMT class I took. Most if...

    Switch States with a WEMT?

In Maine WEMT has a set of protocols that are for certified wilderness EMT's. As said above there are no magic plants but the course in Maine is 65 hrs. plus 4 hrs of praticals. We do a lot of trending on the pt's and a lot of wound cleaning. In Maine the protocols kick in if transport time to...

    Being an EMT is scary!

As said by most here hand washing with soap is the best. This brings back an old wives tale about having to eat a pound of dirt as a kid to stay healthy when you grow up. Hummmmm Builds a good immune system doesn't it.

    Self protection question

I am a former police officer and have a type IIa vest that I have used in training. I am trained to retrieve downed officers with the use of a vest and ballistic blanket. ( part of homeland security grant use) Have not had a situation where it even came to thought to use. But they are available.

    Disinfection of wounds

In the wilderness setting we have extensive training in wound cleaning. We carry as protocol provodone iodine and mix for use with sterile saline and use a 16 or 18 ga needle to irrigate.

When to call for ALS Backup

State by State This is where state protocols come in. In Maine basics can check blood sugar and administer glucose

    Ruling out appendicitis?

No one mentions the patients temp. To me that would help in making a decision about transport mode. Just a thought.

EMT under investigation for alleged touching incident

Conversation This is where talking to the patient and explaining every step you are taking and why on the physical exam, if patient is alert, is a basic must.

    New EMS-er...a few questions

Volunteer I am a wilderness certified EMT-B. We have a volunteer service in Brooks Maine. We pay for training and there are plenty of paid services in the area to work at full time as long as you give 2 years service to the volunteer company. My service is going to pay for my intermediate class...
