    Modified Valsalva

Never tried this, though had an SVT the other day, converted with just blowing into a closed straw.... Well, a pen. My first thought was "Well that's rude".:p;)

    Paramedic Nomads

Gotcha. Thanks for the info. Currently in a figuring-out-my-career-path sort of state, looking at all my options. Still though, seems doable and kinda fun. Maybe in another life...

    Paramedic Nomads

I recently read a side comment in an older post about people who work for AMR and every few years transfer to a new location. Has anybody done this and can talk on it? Does AMR (still) pay travel expenses and allow for this kind of constant movement? Seems really cool, like a good way to get to...

What to expect, first day on the job

So you don't have the job yet? Sorry, just a bit confused by your title and post. What kind of job? 911, IFT, or both? What area?

    Albany County EMS

Considering moving up to this area, currently on Long Island. I've been looking into employment options, seems like the civil service is the way to go for this area. Do you have an accurate pay rate for paramedics? Looked at your link... medics have to show AED competency?

    CHF with low BP

my protocols call for dopamine drip, standing order. can call the doc for epi drip. If anybody is still watching this thread, what's your take on that.

AFIB with RVR and wide complex??

Two year old threads are the BEST threads! I always took "adenosine as a diagnostic tool" to be more of a well known backup plan. By that I mean "well this looks like SVT, lets give the adenosine". Heart slows, revealing a rhythm with no p waves, and more irregular than originally seen, and...

What books do you still read up on / have or recommend.

Must have been the same lecture where they showed correlation between number of posts on a forum and.... Well, literally anything else remotely relevant.

What books do you still read up on / have or recommend.

Well then let me take the opportunity to suggest you work on your reading comprehension skills, because that's certainly not the case. But since you've either missed or are ignoring the point of my post, and are proceeding off topic, then there's no point in continuing. Try to have a good day...

What books do you still read up on / have or recommend.

No, it's the nasty, sarcastic replies that make it that, nothing to do with the viewpoint. Though if the echo chamber existed, it'd be great. Much easier for you to hear yourself talk.

What books do you still read up on / have or recommend.

It was a general comment on preaching old threads, but I appreciate your anger. Since you insist on being nasty, we'll go into it. I'm glad your favorite was printed in 1988. Somebody else's favorite might not have been. No, books aren't "updated" like that, but new ones are published. Somebody...

What books do you still read up on / have or recommend.

Also, there's this funny thing about books... they keep writing more. So an old post may not have a new book on it. And EMS in general is ever evolving. So a question that has been asked before may have a new answer. Just think about back boarding... how a post from 2 years ago vs last week...

What books do you still read up on / have or recommend.

Good suggestions up there, definitely good places to start. I'd also recommend starting with a topic that interests you or a type of call that you get a lot of, and then search either here or google for basic books on that specific topic. There are always the building blocks of anatomy...

    IV Solu-Medrol

Don't know about out there, but by me some placed carry it as the preferred treatment for adrenal insufficiency. But solu-medrol is also acceptable, just not preferred. That's the only protocol it's written in.

EMT-Cardiac looking for ways to move around

I don't know about the EMT-Cardiac, hasn't been in my area since.... (before I was born?), but from what I have seen in my area with other intermediate-type providers if they want to stay in the field they go for their medic, and most regret not doing it sooner. They had a lot of the paramedic...

Breech delivery (Cord around the neck)

Yes inserting the fingers serves two purposes. Mainly to allow perfusion if the cord. If there is pressure on it, it stops blood flow to the baby cutting off oxygen supply. You should be able to feel pulsations in the cord as you would feel an arterial pulse on anyone, if you can't it's probably...

Breech delivery (Cord around the neck)

Elevating the hips does have its advantages, but be careful with how they word things. First, breech birth is when a part other than the head is delivered first. (butt, leg, arm, etc.) Nuchal cord is what this situation would be called. You never want to put pressure on the baby's head, however...

To be or not to be a medic.....decisions decisions decisions

Nassau County PD does run ambulances for the county, though the vast majority are VFD or VAC, so they don't hire THAT many people. Also, while you do go through an abridged academy, and need to be cleared with a firearm, you're not a cop, and you don't carry on duty. There are no double roles...

    Clinicals and Ride Alongs

Also, I know it's a lot, but try to think of the questions during the call or patient contact. Since you may not be physically doing much at all times, but instead observing, think of what you're seeing. If you don't know what they're doing, or don't know why they're doing it, flag that in your...

    Clinicals and Ride Alongs

If you can't think of a specific question after a call and they ask if you have any, you could always just do a recap of the call, talk through the presentation and what happened. If you have no questions because you were comfortable, ask if you can present the patient to them as you would to...
