    Gift for EMT school graduate?

    I second the boots idea.

    Languages

I live in Phoenix... what do you think? Seriously though, I think we do a decent job of handling the non-English speaking population. The community colleges here have a "Spanish for First Responders" class or something like that. The FD also has an immersion program, and they offer a pay...

    Shock and Blood Pressure

Does anyone know what gauge needle they use? I've been curious, as it looks like it's a pretty large bore. Also, they don't use catheters, right? They just leave the needle in until you're done?

    Shock and Blood Pressure

I've given a few times. The only time I had a problem was when I did "Power Red", which is where they take twice as much blood (volume based measurement) as they usually do, separate them, and re-inject the plasma, keeping only the red blood cells. I felt weak for the rest of the day, and was...

Poor patient....2 runs in 9 hours.

Only for those few exceptions. We have half a dozen numeric codes that we use, and those are copied from PD. We only use them for sensitivity reasons... if Mom is frantic wanting to know if her kid is going to be okay, you don't want her overhearing someone on the radio "upgrading the call to...

Poor patient....2 runs in 9 hours.

Sucks to be that guy. Clarification note for those not from Phoenix: 962 = motor vehicle collision with injuries

Religion and the star of life.

It may not be associated with religion anymore, but it certainly was derived from religion and therefore has a historical association. You can believe that the staff and snake came from Moses in the Old Testament or from Asclepius in Greek Mythology; either way, it's religion based.

Sources vary for Normal Vital Stats.

This is from a few months ago. These are from the book I used for my EMT class and to prepare for the NR, and I passed, so these have to be pretty close. Hope it helps.

    College student considering volunteer EMT?

I was a full time Materials Science & Engineering (basically Chemical) engineer. The summer before my first semester, I got EMT-B certified at a community college that had a one-month training program. I started volunteering with the FD, about 20 hours a month, and since then I've switched...

    Ff Vs. Emt

Where I am, the firefighters are the EMTs... you can't even test to be an FF if you don't have an EMT cert, and the FD doesn't hire just EMTs who don't want to be FFs. There are private ambo companies whose EMTs are not FFs, but they have their own separate stations, and when they are onscene...

What do you call an ambulance?

Damn, someone got told. Welcome to the boards.

What do you call an ambulance?

Here, we call them rescues or ambos.

When should people call poison control instead of 911?

I think it makes sense. If they are A&Ox4 and breathing w/o difficulty, call poison control first. The "poison" might not really be poisonous in certain doses or other situations, and poison control operators will most likely know better than an EMT. What's the worst that could happen, they...

lady next door is a frequent flyer

Well if/when she does find out and ask your for assistance, tell her you can't do anything off-duty because of medical control laws, or that you flat-out don't know. Most people I've met ease up a little bit when you tell them you could lose your certification by helping them, and it's pretty...

    CPR songs

Ever since I first learned CPR, I've been using "More Than a Feeling" by Boston. It's a little faster than 100, but I just slow it down a little bit and it works. Actually, the few times I've performed CPR on a real Pt, I actually started thinking this song in my head since it's become habit...

Help with forming a bike team please.

For lights and sirens, I would recommend Cycle Siren (cyclesiren.com). I am using them for a University EMS group that is going to have primary response on bicycles, and I know of other collegiate EMS groups that use them. The owner is also a nice guy.

    Montgomery's Finest Won't Pay Fines

Wow, 40 bucks? Where I live, the speed-camera tickets are $150+. If I only had to pay $40, I'd probably use them to take family portraits!

First and Second Call as a FR

I'm starting a campus-based EMS program at my school. What school do you go to? Do you know if your squad went to the NCEMSF conference at the end of February?

    Ring stuck on Finger

Yeah, I'd recommend buying some ring cutters. They can't be too expensive, especially if you're already buying medical supplies. Either that, or call FD or the EMS agency for the surrounding area. What did you wind up doing?

Ditto. Go to their home page and a couple news articles down you'll find "NAEMT Reacts to Jackson-Hewitt Ad" with a working link.
