Keeping the Fire in EMS Response

Certainly can happen, but usually not all ems personnel are directed towards one call that takes all resources like a structure fire, gas leak or technical rescue. Since a majority of calls are EMS in nature, it's easier to adjust staffing based on volume/time of calls and hopefully avoid that...

Keeping the Fire in EMS Response

Couple things I don't like about fire and ems together is when there is a major call such as a technical rescue, structure fire or gas leak, you have all your engine companies going there and they are also the ems providers. So when medical calls come out during that event, the patient has to...

LA County EMT arrested after being accused by LAPD Sergeant of assaulting patient

Of course his lawyer is going to tell him to be a little more exciting to create a bigger case however at the very least this guy's perception of law enforcement, who he works with almost daily, will be changed. Imagine having 5 police officers surrounding you with their taser(s) out and telling...

LA County EMT arrested after being accused by LAPD Sergeant of assaulting patient

Where did I say they are all in perfect shape? If after only hours of holding him they looked at the body camera footage and determined no crime was committed and chalked it up as a "misunderstanding", that's a big indication of what happened. Especially when the person reporting the "assault"...

LA County EMT arrested after being accused by LAPD Sergeant of assaulting patient

Did the Sgt. want him to let the patient just jump out of a moving ambulance? The officers should be disciplined and the department's reputation would be a lot better if they had more transparency. This guy deserves $$$, hopefully enough to constitute a punitive punishment to avoid this from...

    Transitioning to an in-hosptal role...

Is this a standby ER? They have that license in CA, kind of like catalina island's ER. Not staffed 24hrs a day but the doctor has to be available to come 24hrs a day. Also, another hospital transitioned from an ER to a 24hr Urgent Care but also has inpatient rooms and a surgery center is...

    FireFighter Arrested by CHP. Thoughts?

And I can almost guarantee you if there was no video of the interaction, she would have been carted off to jail and the officers would face no discipline. Also, if a normal citizen made a false arrest/detainment, they would almost certainly be criminally charged for it. Lucky for this officer...

Ambulance Crew Configuration: Are Two Paramedics Better Than One?

Excellent, thanks for clarifying. It's been awhile since I looked so I didn't know it was for training. If they are at a 1:1, are they considered ALS or BLS for IFT purposes? On a side note for people, I remember one time a person was bit by a dog at a gym in Los Angeles. LAFD dispatched a...

Ambulance Crew Configuration: Are Two Paramedics Better Than One?

Correct, however in years past an IFT company can request a special waiver from LA County Department of Health to operate a 1 Medic/1 EMT IFT amabulance. I don't know if they would be considered ALS to transport if called upon by the fire department, but there was a process.

Ambulance Crew Configuration: Are Two Paramedics Better Than One?

In LA County, you have to have 2 paramedics on each ALS ambulance if you run 911, that's the regulation. A minimum of 2 would respond to an ALS call where an ambulance is requested. You could have 1 paramedic on an assessment fire engine and the rest EMT Basics, but they are non-transport. Some...

    EMS Liaison/Hospital Relations

It might open up that door, or it might not. In EMT school, they have a requirement where you have to do a minimum of 3 ride alongs with an amulance company or fire department and they also have a requirement to do 1 shift at an ER kind of like a tech. Most EMT's probably won't be techs in their...

    EMS Liaison/Hospital Relations

Is the hospital affiliated with any RN programs? It might be a good idea to offer ride-alongs to nurses in training, kind of what they do to EMT's in training. I think that would be pretty awesome. On a semi-side note, one hospital I used to visit frequently when relatives were admitted used to...

How do you handle a situation where Hospitals try to have you transport unstable patients..?

Question for you: How does an acute care hospital with no cardiology resources treat or release a STEMI patient? They will have to transfer them to a stemi-center. Stable or not, they will have to transfer them. Also, like DesertMedic66 said, insurance reasons. Kaiser hospitals with transfer...

CA and SD cert with misdemeanor

That is something that you would have to explain and they should definitely take into consideration. For our employees, just prior to getting a livescan, we have them fill out a "criminal record statement". On there, it asks if you were ever charged with a misdemeanor or felony and also asks for...

CA and SD cert with misdemeanor

I deal with livescans in my line of work now for employees and it usually comes up as what you were charged with and there also should be details under that section that deals with what the outcome/sentencing were. Some applications, for example CHP, want to know anything you have ever been...

Tow company under fire for booting ambulance

I don't know what state you are in, but most states, even if you are a 911 city owned ambulance, you can't disregard the laws unless you are on a call. In CA, that's the case. You can't just park on red blocking a fire hydrant to eat at McDonald's. But who's going to give them a ticket lol?

Tow company under fire for booting ambulance

One person in the EMS1 article comment section said the towing company was wrong and that emergency vehicles can park pretty much anywhere they want so they can get to a call quickly. Most states have laws allowing that only in an emergency. Ambulance, fire truck or police can't just park...

EMT seen on video beating restrained 17-year-old boy

Unbelievable. Although her EMS career is likely over, she is lucky she was only charged with battery/assault, most likely misdemeanors. Her first time offense, probably ends up costing her probation and anger management classes. She could have been charged with child abuse as the child was under...

Cali / LA Gurney van's requiring an EMT?!?

Some time ago, my dad used to take a gurney van in LA to dialysis. Although the guys spoke very little english so it was hard to communicate at times, they were nice and on time or early almost every single time, which made life a lot easier. P and I transportation was their name, red and white...

    Question for the LA area

I 100% agree with you that it's not really needed as much as the SGV or Antelope Valley. It's still a pretty cool idea and can be beneficial, but Santa Monica residents are 5-8 minutes away, at most, from a stroke center. The only thing this MSU can help in SM right now is telling the difference...
