How much did becoming an EMT/medic cost you?

For those going through/having gone through paramedic school I'm surprised I'm not seeing more costs like "my marriage" or "my friends and family". :P I don't remember what I paid for EMT school, think it was $600 or $700 after tuition and books and all. Paramedic school ran me about...

    chemical restraint

I agree on the diazepam, where I used to work we carried it and it was nice to have. Both there and where I'm working now we do have it in our protocols to use midazolam. I've lucked out so far and have yet to need to use it for this purpose but I suppose now that I just said that it'll happen...

    Out of state

Where did you hear this? As far as fire departments in Arizona, I can only speak to the Phoenix area and can tell you there isn't much hiring going on at all. Economy is still bad there and while departments were growing and looking to hire a lot about 3-4 years ago, that hasn't been the case...

    The Combative Opiate Patient

For the record when I was referring to IO's being in protocols I wasn't suggesting they be used for Narcan. I was talking just their use in general, there are situations where they're warranted. Strictly for the use of Narcan is not one of them.

ER tech pay in Southern Illinois?

Yeah, took that into account after posting.

ER tech pay in Southern Illinois?

Is this what the pay for techs are in the Chicago area too? I worked as one in Phoenix and was making $14/hour base pay, and got shift differential that got up to $15.75 if I was working night shift.

    Help with monitors...

You can do this with the Zoll, too. It's what I do and usually works out pretty well.

    Medic Students!!!

Yes, and since you said you work in addition to all of that good luck with the "attempting to have a life" part. ;) It's all worth it in the end, though. That said, I'm not jealous of you at all right now!

    The Combative Opiate Patient

Yeah it's in our protocols to do so.

Post the # your test stopped at, and if you Passed/Failed

I was the same way with mine. I got cut off in the mid 70's and was like "uhhhh....ok". I didn't feel great about it, but I also knew there was no way I bombed it bad enough that they cut me off that quickly. I took mine late afternoon so I didn't find out until the next morning if I passed or...

    The Combative Opiate Patient

When you come across a patient like this there's nothing wrong with exposing them, not only for the sake of finding an IV but you have no idea why they're down. You need to be able to assess their entire body. Obviously depending on the kind of clothing there are different ways you can do it...

Post the # your test stopped at, and if you Passed/Failed

When I took mine it cut me off in the mid 70's and I passed. A friend of mine from class got up in the 130's before his cut him off. He thought for sure he failed but he ended up passing.

    The Combative Opiate Patient

This is definitely the ideal way to do it...enough to breathe. But if they do wake up, going along with Chief Complaint's post, if they do wake up it's fun to see how ticked they are you took their high away. What would be even more fun is to tell them how cheap the Narcan is you used to take...

Do you have immediate family who do EMS?

My dad was a third generation firefighter (retired) but was also a medic, mom is a nurse of 30 years, stepmom was an ER nurse for nearly 40 years, her sister is also a nurse. Little bit of history in the family. :P

    Chicago Fire Department Paramedic List

Did anyone else on here apply and get on the list? If so, we can start a dialogue here about how the hiring process is moving along and whatever else. Letters are supposed to be received by August 31st...but I'm hoping "by" means it'll come much sooner!

    paramedic schools in Chicago

Those three programs are all very good, and the Northwest Community Hospital medic program is very good, too. You register through Harper College but it's all done through the hospital and if you pass and graduate and such you'll be part the Northwest EMS System which is one of the tougher ones...

Was it always a calling to you?

Fire was my calling, coming from a firefighting family. Got my EMT-B because you have to, though I did have some medical curiosity and desire to learn based on my dad also being a medic first and then a firefighter/medic. Once I started EMT school I just really took to it and loved learning the...

    Chicago Companies

Advantage, Kurtz, and Trace are a few others. As mentioned, the ER tech route isn't a bad one to pursue either, even if you land an EMT stop with an ambo. The pay is generally better and you usually have a slightly expanded scope working in the ER as an EMT-B than out in the field.
