Yesterday, one of my coworkers performed a 12-lead on a 2yM who scraped his knee and cried so hard he vomited. When his EMT asked him why, he replied "because he's ALS". Sure, he may be following protocol, but it is still completely stupid.

Putting your feet on the ground channels more vibration sounds up through your own body. Try to lift your feet up to isolate yourself from the truck (so that you're only touching the paded bench) seat to hear better.
It sounds like you're doing just fine. That confidence speech is the generic one I'd give to most people new to EMS who aren't sorely lacking anywhere.
Her partner is also her boyfriend. Why didn't he just ride it in instead? Or help her restrain the patient before transport if he lacks the qualifications? There are too many holes in this story.
