    jaw thrust

Okay, so despite all this, I still don't seem to have an answer. What does a correctly executed jaw thrust feel like (if anything beyond seeing/hearing/feeling an open airway), and once done, does it stay open on its own? So far I'm gathering that it doesn't feel like much of anything other...

    jaw thrust

I can see how someone might end up thinking that based upon the lack of detail that the book and literature goes into, and the implication that once the airway is opened that way that you can then go on to do other things. Though I assume once you put in an OPA that you can then let go.

    jaw thrust

So RedZone, when you do it, do you feel a click or something that tells you when you've pulled hard enough? And the jaw stays in place after you've done it, even on the conscious patients, or do you have to sit there and hold it up?

    jaw thrust

So, you read about the jaw thrust everywhere, and if I recall correctly, in my class I was told that if you perform the maneuver correctly, the jaw will remain in the elevated position without you having to hold it there. For those of you who have actually successfully performed a jaw thrust...

Thanks guys, that's all excellent information. Just wanted to know what sensations I should be prepared to accept as normal.

question about sternum/ribcage injury during CPR

I was only recently certified and still have no field experience. One always hears that chest compressions can and often do cause great chest injury. I've even heard that the sternum can become completely detached from the rest of the rib cage. This sounds pretty reasonable when I think about...

    is this text used nation-wide?

So I'm taking the EMT-B course, finally. We're using the text "Emergency Care and Transport of the Sick and Injured" 9th edition, published by Jones and Bartlett Publishers of Sudbury, MA. I happen to be in Massachusetts as well, which makes me wonder if this book is specific to my state...

    Ed. Requirements

Thank you disassociative for that clarification on EMT-IV. Firecoins - are you specifying course requirements that are pre-requisites for a paramedic program? Are they somehow prerequisites for even being an EMT-B? Or are they simply "these are a good idea to take" courses? I'm asking what...

    Ed. Requirements

I think Learn2Live's question - and he can correct me if I'm wrong - was, in order to work as an EMT-B, is one required by some statute or protocol to have a certain level of education, i.e. GED vs. high school diploma vs. college degree, in order to even exist as a working EMT-B, or is the...

    Ed. Requirements

You mean in order to get a job once you have the EMT-B cert, do you also need some level of higher education in order to be seriously considered for a job as an EMT? That's a good question to which I don't have the answer. Hopefully someone else can chime in on that one. I do know that, at...

Hello again... question about class in one state, job in another

That word "reciprocity" was exactly what I needed to know. Thanks for that link. (It helped my find this link - http://www.nyhealth.gov/nysdoh/ems/certification/reciprocity.htm - which should answer all my questions.)

Hello again... question about class in one state, job in another

A while back I posted some question or other about becoming an EMT, and I did not end up taking the class back then, but I am still considering it. At the moment I'm in Massachusetts taking care of my very sick parents, but I intend to move back to New York whenever this madness ends. My...

Greetings. Thinking of becoming an EMT; have questions...

Hello everyone. I'm currently only thinking of becoming an EMT (possibly to eventually be a stepping stone into medical school, though that's still a distant decision at this point) and thought I would raise my questions with you all, since this seems to be the best and most active online forum...
