    EMT Tricks of the trade

I have used it a number of times ... the goal is to enrich (increase the oxygenation) of the air around the mouth and nose of the child. Even if there is no NC or Ped NRB, just O2 tubing pointed at the child's face is an improvement.

    The poor volunteers...

You really need to get out and see some more of our country ... I don't mean any personal offense by this, but you are a very well educated man who just made a very uneducated comment. Come visit Montana, or Wyoming, or some of the other areas where the population of the entire state would...

    Help! Choking! Nothing is working!

You are jumping to conclusions that were not referred to. I was referring to obtaining a patent airway before using a BVM and nothing more. In a choking patient, I understand that this may not be possible. After reading some of the recent posts, i guess I could see the value of asperation vs...

    Help! Choking! Nothing is working!

I'd be inserting a combi-tube before I started with a BVM ... and I was referring to the instructor as you noted in your last sentence.

    Your instructor is an idiot.

    Mouth to Mouth

NO - unless it's my children or wife. During my very first CPR experience (I was 18 at the time) the guy threw up in my mouth. Cured me for life.

Those of you who teach EMT-B ...

I have a college degree ... but not in those areas ... I don't plan to teach in a college setting, or to those above the Basic level. I was first certified as an EMT-B in 1979. I was employed by a large Developmental Disabilities agency as their corporate trainer for a number of years...

Good books to read before starting EMT-B class?

Go back to the bookstore and buy an EMT-B text book. Learn the basics before you get into the deep stuff. Your instructor may be ham-stringed by having to "unteach" anything you have learned incorrectly prior to the class. Focus on the basics ... let those who know the correct "path" of...

Those of you who teach EMT-B ...

I am heading to a course this weekend to become a lead instructor for EMT-B courses here in Montana. I have been reading (lurking is more like it) here over the course of about a year and have noticed a distinctive trend by the well-respected members here that there is a longing for EMT-B's to...

    Rural EMS Response Times

I am an EMT-Basic volunteer in a statewide system of "Quick Response Teams" (QRT's) that are made up of individuals labeled "Quick Response Units" (QRU's). As has already been mentioned, there are VAST areas of this state that are seriously remote and at times (mainly winter) severely...

    Rural EMS Response Times

I am one of those QRU's Hal9000 speaks of and he is correct on all parts. I have run calls that are as close at both of my neighbors on both sides of my house, to one a few weeks ago that was almost 20 miles of gravel. Took me over 25 minutes to get there. What part of Montana are you in Hal??
