Start Basic Training Sept. 9.....NEED ADVICE/POINTERS FOR PREPARING!

I can tell by the way you write that you're a smart guy. You'll do fine. B) I completely agree with that. Basic is just glorified first aid.

EMT-B basic in Wisconsin is a walk in the park for a college student. When I took it, I didn't study at all, got an A in the class, and passed the NREMT and practical on the first attempt. It will probably be similar wherever you are.

    Pre-meds in EMS

Good call. We shouldn't let anyone with no experience apply any of their knowledge. Only people with experience should be able to do things.

    Pre-meds in EMS

What you said was.. And now you are saying the oppisate. That lower levels can question higher levels. Interesting. I agree with you now.

    Pre-meds in EMS

You need to get off your high horse. Anyone can and should question anybody (when the situation is appropriate) regarding patient care. We are all in it to learn and to get better, and to sometimes save lives. Sometimes higher levels can learn from lower levels.

    Pre-meds in EMS

There isn't any human anatomy on the MCAT. It's chem, bio, some math/physics, "reading comprehension", and, I believe, two essays.

Funny one liners you've said to overheard to a patient

A few days ago we had an 80 y/o w/ new onset back pain. Got her in the ambo, checked vitals, started a line, put her on a nasal cannula. EMT-I said "is there anything else you guys want to do?" At that moment, another EMT's phone began to ring, it was some kind of techno song. Me...

    UHF or VHF

800 MHz is UHF. Anyways, my FD uses 800 MHz, but we have backup VHF radios in every rig, which we have never used. The dispatch channel is simulcast over VHF for the pagers.

    Pre-meds in EMS

Any pre-med that claims to be highly educated about medicine is crazy. We don't learn anything. A little chemistry... a little bio... A&P is not even required. Med school is where you learn the fun stuff.

    Uncooperative c-spine patients?

I have had two patients fight us after being longboarded. One was postictal, started fighting, was restrained, and got 10mg valium (per medical control). The other patient fell down a full flight of stairs and hit his head on a small table conveniently placed at the bottom of the stairs. He...

    Pre-meds in EMS

I went pre-med because of EMS experience. Not the other way around. I'm sorry to hear that some people think I'm "taking up space" in the EMS field.
