    ER tech vs. EMT

I work both as an EMT on an ambulance and in a hospital as a tech. The hospital provided me with additional training for in hospital work. I have gained valuable experience from working in the ER that would take me much longer to receive pre-hospital. Before anyone argues it, I agree that it...

    Pausing for the tube

I never pause for a tube. I have also seen doctors pause in the ER setting but I do not feel it is worth the pause. Take a quick look with compressions in progress and if you don't see anything than pull out and insert appropriate blind airway device.

    CPAP & Auto-Peep

It has always helped me to think of it as keeping the reserve volume up to keep the smaller portions of the airways open. Thus allowing a decreased effort by the patient.

How liberal are you with antiemetics?

I would venture to say that giving Zofran is a lot less invasive than intubating a patient. If we look at the big picture, you can give Zofran and the patient has less of a risk of aspiration and will sleep it off in the ER or you can intubate and now this patient is most likely going to be...

    Psychiatric Pt running

We fortunetly should not run into that issue as we are required to have P.D. on board and the patient handcuffed to the cot. So unless they can open the door and release the cot they are not going anywhere and if they somehow managed that feat it would be on the officer instead of us.

    emt-b meds

I cannot say that I am proud to have started this whole mess of a thread but it has taught me a lot about the topics that fire up EMS personnel. I never knew of the feud that exists between EMT-B's and Paramedics. I still cannot quite figure out if it is because EMT-B's try and be more than...

    emt-b meds

When you say doing it half arse, are you saying that going from EMT-B to EMT-I to EMT-P is doing it half arse or are you saying that we should all just go straight to EMT-P without a good base? I have never heard of a course that takes someone with out an EMT-B license at least and makes them a...

Applying a EKG to a female patient

We have the same situation. They told us that within a year every department in our system has to have this capability so that, depending on the situation, we can have the CATH lab up and ready to go by the time we get to the hospital which will save precious time over the ER doing there own 12...

    emt-b meds

I agree completely. As I’ve stated before in other threads. I really hate how we just get rushed through this course and then are in charge of real lives. We really learn only once a patient's life is on the line. I have absolutely no arguments with you on that one. I am currently enrolled...

    emt-b meds

I work in central IL. We can give 2mg NARCAN IN. Is this amount enough to cause seizures or lethal arrhythmia? We were not informed of this in class, only that it works pretty quickly and that to be prepared to deal with the patient being mad at you ruining there high.

    emt-b meds

With this post I do believe that every single word in my original thread has been ridiculed. I would like to move on and not be judged from now on as the unprofessional "EMT-B" who made a mistake in not thinking when spelling my meds in a forum. If I had known it would have brought out the...

    emt-b meds

I am very sorry that I started this thread. I did not mean to offend everyone here. I was not comparing all of the "cool" things I could do. I was simply curious as to what differences there are around the country. I am also sorry I did not do a search first to find this topic already...

    emt-b meds

I'm sorry, I was under the impression that personal attacks are not allowed here and that people do not assume that just because I focused on what the drug does instead of how it's spelled that I must be bringing down the profession. Now I understand that it makes us look bad to have bad...

    Where is everyone from?

My name is Jake and I am from central IL. I volunteer for a Fire Department that just picked up an ambulance service because the local ALS service just closed down. I also work in another small town in the county as a part-time emt-b.
