At one of my first fires my partner & I pulled an older black lab from the house. She was barely awake, actually nipped at us as we carried her. EMS on scene gave blow-by and bought the pooch another couple days. I'd admit she wasn't in the greatest health prior to her eventual demise. Since...
Absolutely true! However, I will argue that many (not all) 16+s wouldn't sustain being able to handle a continual array of difficult issues. Nor should they HAVE TO! I believe it was posted recently on this site the same opinion in another thread.
Life has it's way of getting us ready for...
One could also consider a chainsaw on the tree limb(s) if possible. The situation would need to be perfect, but with proper patient position and limb arrangement this could be an option to cut the tree out from the person.
(oops, just noticed a mention of trimming a couple posts ago!)
Thanks again folks. These types of calls are frequent in emergency services, but THANKFULLY we don't see them as often here. The worst part for me to get past is the father seeing us basically start working. The look on his face when I asked him to move was unforgettable.
Fortunately we...
Thank you all. I'm not sure what I was lookin for in replies, but your words do help. This is harder than I thought to shake. I do know that there are certain things I will do differently at the next one.
Thanks again.

god no - I didn't mean to give that impression at all. I'm sure I didn't say it. I think we need to abolish EMT-B and all vollie squads. Amateurs are not needed.
Paramedic should be the entry level into the profession and it should be an associate degree - two year minimum. Advancements...
There always more to do. I have found myself in at least the last 2 years ALWAYS having more training and education on my mind. FR was one thinf, EMT-B was just another. I will eventually work as a medic, even part time. This theory doesn't even pay for itself, but I'm willing to go forward...
I dunno. I had been a FR with 2 refreshers going into EMT class, so much of the info wasn't new by any means. Not at all to say I was 100% proficient in all skills, but I felt darn confident.
I was certainly surprised at how glossed over the curriculum was. It was obvious one wouldn't be...
