    I feel dumb asking, but...

I'm a dork! Now I feel really dumb. I fixed it. I had replied to a message on my page and had to approve my own message. It was from last summer, but I think my 4 year old was messing with the computer when my profile was up. That's what I'm going with anyway.

    I feel dumb asking, but...

I have a notification that I have an unapproved visitor message, but when I click on it it just takes me to an old message that I have. The notification just popped up yesterday. I have tried everything I can think of to find it, or at least make the notification go away. Can someone help me...

    My luck

we start at a whole $8.35/hour, but shifts are typically 24 hours and you get double time after 12 hours so it evens out. I still make more as a phlebotomist though. Of course it's not about the money. I'm in love with emergency medicine and I need the hours on the rig so I can go to medic school.

what should I know about the Basic Emt course

Make sure to do your reading (and homework if you have it). A lot of people in my class just copied the answers out of the back of the book and then bombed the tests because they didn't know the material. When you do your clinical/ride along hours jump in and do as much as they will let you and...

    Baker Act Turned Sour

well, at least your student had a good story to take back to class with him :). I had a normal looking 15 year old boy try to bite me yesterday. You just never know I guess.

    EMT-Basic in california

Up here on the central coast you have to just submit an application and wait for the hiring pool to open. You have to work part time/on call for a minimum of 6 months before they will consider you for full time, and there aren't any agencies in my county that take volunteers. It's rough. EMT-B's...

Hi! I read your thread about the issues your having. I replied to it :) The whole thing is stupid and unfair. It should be decided on an individual basis.

    Diabetic EMT

I'm getting ready to start this battle myself. I've been type 1 for 20 years and rarely have any kind of issue with my blood sugar, never while driving. I always test before I get behind the wheel. Blanket policies like this infuriate me. There have been numerous studies that show a type 1...

    ER tech vs. EMT

At the hospital where I work as a phlebotomist in Ca the ER techs are required to have their EMT-B and be certified by the hospital as a Spanish translator. Unfortunately this has led to us having at least 1 terrible tech who was basicly hired because she was the only applicant who was fluent in...

    Favorite EMS Street Tricks

We were taught in class to offer juice or oral glucagel and make them a sandwich if possible. PB&J is a great choice not just because of complex carbs, but also because of the protien which helps keep the BSL from crashing again. That part wasn't taught in school, but gained from 20 years of...

    substitutes for equipment.

As a diabetic who has been given oral glucose from the med kits twice, I thank you for carrying cake gel. The med kit stuff takes like chunky cherry or lime flavored hair spray. It gets the job done, but it's bad going down and even worse when you throw it back up. It's still better than an IV...

    Something Weird

I've seen it. 97y/o female. Brand new EMT-b did a sternal rub and caused a massive skin tear on her chest. Thin skin and bad technique don't mix. Not the method I would have personally gone with, but as a phlebotomist I was not in a position to say anything. The medic, the nurse, and the doctor...

    Wearing your stethoscope

As a phlebotomist in the ER I seem to always get the crazy people. Through trial and error (and getting my clock cleaned a few times) I've learned to keep equipment, badges, ect... off my neck and preferably completely out of patient reach. I haven't worked on an ambulance yet, other than...
