Life as a dispatcher?

I’m thinking about applying as a dispatcher at a local jurisdiction. I’m looking for any ideas on what the job is really like. It appears to be a 911 job, dispatching fire, rescue, police, water/sewer, and who knows who else. I’m currently an EMT at a volunteer agency in a different jurisdiction.

have you asked if you could shadow a dispatcher for a few hours or shifts? this would give you a feel for the work environment and how they run things.

This!

Dispatch centers vary greatly, even if the population is about the same. Ask lots of questions. If you're on dispatcher duty, will you be expected to answer 911 calls if other call takers are busy? Do you eat lunch/dinner at the console or are you able to get away? Etc.
