http://newsroom.heart.org/news/ambulance-magnesium-treatment-fails-to-improve-stroke-outcome

February 13, 2014

Study Highlights:

Giving magnesium to stroke patients in an ambulance soon after symptoms began did not reduce the severity of disability measured 3 months later.
The study successfully demonstrated that up to three-quarters of stroke patients calling 9-1-1 early can be started on treatment in the first “golden hour” after symptoms emerge.
This early-treatment system opens the door to testing other possibly brain-saving therapies.

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 13, 2014 – Giving intravenous magnesium to stroke patients soon after the start of symptoms, in an attempt to protect brain cells deprived of oxygen, failed to improve stroke-related disability 3 months later, according to research presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference 2014.

the endless study hype machine said:
Investigators showed that paramedics can successfully deliver intravenous medications to most stroke patients within an hour after symptoms begin.
EMS research: finding ways to perform useless interventions faster!

It doesn't look like the paper is out yet, and of course it's not linked, but here's the pilot trial: http://stroke.ahajournals.org/content/35/5/e106.long. A bit more digging pulls up a lot of animal models and several phases of human trials showing... no benefit.
