ERT-1 Tool - additional information

The fire department.
^ what he said.

The light is no better than my penlight.

The seat belt cutter is no better than my bandage shears.

And any EMT who has ever needed a window punch didn't look hard enough for another way in.

So what exactly is the point of this thing, other than to take money from rookies?

Self preservation on POV when submerged underwater away from your EMS tools.

good one :glare:

Actually the last time I had a chance to use a tool like this, the MVA patient had RMA'ed and was in the back of a police car avoiding the rain with seat belt on. Patient changed their mind, the mutual aid rescue squad put on a KED without realizing the patient put the police car seatbelt on. I asked the other EMT if you think the police officer would mind if we gut his backseat seatbelt.

Here's a tip. Don't drive into the water and you'll never need one.

Light = pen light and/or flashlight
Seatbelt cutter = my shears
Window punch = rock

:P

Tell that to my neighbor who has done it four times now :P

Has to be some sort of world record if you ask me

ROFL! That's a real "doh!" moment there! But I have absolutely no idea what "RMA'ed" means. That must be one of those terms you don't learn until your 37th year of EMS practice.

Ah! Certainly a valid point there. I keep a similar device in my car for the same reason. I can think of zero reason for an EMS provider to carry one though. All those functions are already covered by other implements. And where would you even carry this thing anyhow? It would be muy uncomfortable in your pocket, and it would look totally whacker on your belt.

I'm quite certain it stands for "refused medical attention".

I carry one of those tools in my fire gear. The glass punch works very well, as does the seat belt cutter. The pushbutton for the light is a push on-push off type, and it is unprotected against unintentional turn ons, so I quickly killed my battery. I didn't bother replacing it since I figured it would just happen again. I find myself wishing sometimes, that it it had a nice serrated blade, but overall a good tool.

Where is South Florida? Is that like Cuba.

RMA - Refused Medical Assistance here in NY State.

I'm pretty sure that is mostly a northeast thing. I've never heard it anywhere else I have been. Seems kind of pointless to me since "refused" is both easier to write and easier to say.

What? Refused easier to write? There's four extra letters in there :P
