highlights from the article:

As New York City continues to recover from the full impact COVID-19 had on the city, the de Blasio administration is considering laying off "hundreds" of FDNY Emergency Medical Services workers, a source familiar with the possibility told ABC News.

Mayor Bill de Blasio has warned 22,000 city workers could be laid off because of a projected $9 billion shortfall.

"Yesterday, we were praised as heroes, essential workers saving lives. Today, the city government treats us like zeros," said Oren Barzilay, president of FDMY EMS Local 2507. "New Yorkers who lived through this deadly pandemic know otherwise."

Nine EMS workers died of coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

Barzilay said as many as 400 of his members are facing potential layoffs and he warned of delayed responses to emergencies.

Also remember, this is the same mayor who said EMS didn't deserve a livable wage because #theworkisdifferent

Same city that called for help, brought in people from other cities and states to help (at their states expenses and home pay) and then when they got home they get letters that state that they will be charged NYS taxes. Surprise.

They're not the only state to do that. California tried to tax my military income when I wasn't even a resident of the state. Claimed I owed them state taxes because the money was made while I was stationed there. Also claimed they would be able to tax my pension prorated for the years I was stationed there. That was decades ago and it's depressing to see states still trying to pull these stunts

Are they winning this or can you tell them to stuff it?

Told them to stuff it and never heard anything else. Like I said, that was decades ago so things may have changed.

not to go off on a tangent, but how would that be any different than NY taxing people who work in NYC but live in NJ or CT and commute daily? I know the military has a different set of rules, but my NYC employees have their taxes taken out by their employer prior to getting their paycheck (at least that was what happened to me during my very brief time working in manhattan 15+ years ago).

Because people that work in NYC are being paid NYC wages.
People that came from Utah and West Virginia to help in NYC during the 1st round of COVID crisis were being paid by their home state at their home pay rates; and when they got back home they received letters from NYS saying that they were going to be charged taxes from NYS at the NYS tax rate.
And for a group of people that showed up from a company that set up a tent hospital in Central park, and maintained it for 3 weeks, and then took it down and packed it up and took it back to their home state and company (as volunteers) that got the same letters when they weren't getting paid anything that really hurts.

I don't know if any of them are going to have to pay it or not; and I know that the Utah State Attorney General was going to fight it for those that live in Utah that went. But it is stupid; especially if you ever want outside help again.
