Are you young? Like teens/early 20's...

I was a Phoenix Fire Cadet back in 03-05... That was first taste of fire/EMS. It was a solid program and I got to do a lot of training and volunteering. On calls I was allowed to do pretty much as much as the crew was comfortable with, and I was pretty lucky most times.

Most departments in the region have Cadet and Alternative Response (volunteer) programs. I do think they hanged the name of the AR in Phoenix though.

Also, AMR Maricopa County is hiring with a $5k hiring bonus. Just saw that recently.
I'm in my mid 20s. The thing is I just want to do volly fire and EMS. I'm not looking for a full-time job as a firefighter since that kind of schedule wouldn't let me study (pre-med).

For clarification, the advertisement I saw was for paramedics only.
I only got my EMT-B.

The Phx metro area doesn't have any volunteer 911 type things, and the Cadet programs have age caps. You'll have to look outside of the valley.

Maricopa county sheriff (MCSO) has some "volunteer" SAR and EMS through their sheriff posse program. But, I think that any medical through MCSO would be secondary to LE and SAR duties. I also hear that MCSO's SAR program is relatively challenging to get into, and that they require extensive initial training. Phoenix FD also has a volunteer community assistance program that uses volunteer EMT's, however they only run behavioral health calls and social work stuff. @SandpitMedic is right, 911 in the valley is all paid professional, and dominated by Fire. You could look at part time through Rural Metro/AMR, or for a contingent position as an ED tech.

Being your PreMed I would recommend looking for a ED Tech postion. Banner Desert in Mesa youll have lots of hands on and get to work alot more hands on with doctors vs. other hospitals in the valley. Its a busy level 2 trama center with lots of drug ODs and ALOC.

Also Mesa PD has an officer there 24/7 and have even seen a PT get tazed in a ED bed while dropping a PT there before. Its the wildwest of EDs there.

I worked for southwest in Mesa and even with the reputation rural metro has I loved my job. I only left for more security but now that amr owns rural it was pretty much a moot point.

Apply apply apply man, it took me 7 months between when i applied and interviewed to when I was formally hired.

Abrazo has Ed tech positions posted. Rural has full and part time positions posted, banner has Ed tech posted, amr is still hiring for full time to fill positions in inter facility (no part timers being hired currently).

Phoenix fire has their CRT program where you can volunteer as an emt.
Mesa and afew of the other east valley depts have cadet/volunteer programs but you won't be running calls or fighting fires.

Honestly man, inter facility isn't glorious but it's a job and it pays the same as 911. And honestly the calls aren't different.

Pm me if you have any questions or anything, there are options but it may take some time.

AMR is always hiring out here. Currently hiring for a hopeful start date in Jan. If you have questions regarding it let me know and I'll see what I can do to help answer them.

Are you talking about California? If so I recommend avoiding that state like its ISIS controlled Iraq.

I was in California and depending on where you go, yes I would avoid most of it. No I was referring to the Phoenix operation, truly are hiring non stop currently

Oh yeah. Ive already interviewed for them and was offered a job but turned it down. To much uncertainty for me right now from their operation. Was told I was interviewing for a 911 slot given my experience but once in the interview that changed. With fire departments such as Apache Junction, Mesa, and Goodyear taking over ALS ambulance operations I feel its gonna get interesting real quick.

Honestly man. The fire departments look a lot for private experience from local providers. Maybe even more so now with them looking to get into the transport business.

I would apply at the privates again and accept any position offered if you truly want to get into the field. Most of the departments just did all of their testing for the next 2 years.

Totally understand. So you just want to work EMS for a private or wildland?

My side job does fire line medical and are picking up people in you're red carded. Other than that from what I hear Phoenix is soon to be all fire or amr in the not so distant future.

Hey guys, you won't believe this sh*t, but I already applied to several ED tech and patient care tech jobs (Children's, Banner, Abrazo, Etc) and none of them have called me back. I even tried to get a hold of HR and they would never answer my calls or return my msgs (IDK if my out area phone has to do with it). I'm like salted or something. I decided I'm gonna head back home next year, much more opportunities (more pay) there for EMS and I'm gonna see if I go for Paramedic.

I'm getting frustrated trying to work here also. I'm at least doing events, but I really want to get back on a rig.
