Planning on going to EKG/Phlebotomy school.

Hey guys. Would it be a good idea to go to EKG/Phlebotomy school? Or just go straight to medic school? I'm currently an EMT.

I plan on going to medic school eventually but I'm in no rush cause I know medic school is hard. So I'm thinking if I take that class I could start working at a hospital & get more experience before going to medic school.

First ask around and find what kind of in-house training the hospitals provide for their tech positions.

That makes very little sense to me. You will get plenty of practice starting IVS and performing EKGs in paramedic school. If you want to be a Paramedic you are better off just going to school now. Your experience as an ED tech would be a good background, but is really not necessary.

Knowledge is good; I wouldn't want to discourage you from seeking more of it. However, a better way to prepare might be to brush up on generic skills like math, reading for comprehension, and test-taking. Unlike phlebotomy and EKGs, those things won't be taught in medic school.

If you're good at, say, 9th-grade math, read regularly, and do well on multiple-choice exams, you can focus on deciding whether to get more experience or not. There isn't one path right for everyone; for me, a couple of years as an EMT definitely helped me get through some of the practical parts of medic school.

Depends on what your goal is.

If you plan on being a medic, do not pass go do do not collect $200, go directly to medic school.

If you want to do something else, it might make sense to get you phleb/EKG cert.

As an emt I would hold off on als skill courses unless my company sponsored me through them.

There are plenty of resources for emts to gain more knowledge of what you are seeing on a strip and many times your medic partner (at least my partners) won't mind explaining some stuff to you.

As for starting lines I too think it would be cool but where I work Its not part of my scope so I would never get any practice.

with an EKG/phlebotomy course you can get a job in a hospital, clinic, urgent care, lab...lots of uses outside of EMS.

All the hospitals in my region will train these skills after hire (or hire paramedics). I guess I wrongly assumed that was how it works everywhere and I apologize for that.
