So i have a question about FDNY DQ's during the background investigation.

I am in my investigation. Have a few tickets from '08 that they said they do not care about.

But i had a suspension from '11 to '12. ( Almost exactly one year ) for failure to pay ( red light ticket on a bicycle, it goes against your DL apparently ) as soon as i paid it, the suspension was lifted.

Just wondering if anyone has a similar experience. My investigator didn't mention it and told me to watch for my next notices. But im just nervous.

Any answers are greatly appreciated! And pay your damn tickets on time! lol

I am roughly 5' 9" and am afraid that my height might hold me back in some way. Also, I know that the job is very physically demanding. Any advice on how to train for it? I am in the middle of losing weight already and I'd love any advise I can get on what to focus on to excel at this profession. Once again, please advise. : )

Where do we lack and what can we do to improve services? I would like to see some kind of training where EMS providers both metro/rural do training exercises with the military/hospital on a regular basis. Nothing is will stop an MCI but I think we can certainly be prepared. What do do you think?

They charge a $200 non-refundable application fee. It does NOT guarantee admission. I mean, really? Can a brother at least get a heads up as to how many slots you might have available, what the acceptance rate is and all that jazz BEFORE I take a plunge? Or how about this: a smaller application fee. That way it won't smell like a scam.

I'm sure NMETC makes good on their promise to get you trained up to take the NREMT but the application fee seems like a fast and easy way to make a few extra bucks on all the suckers that WON'T be admitted. Is there something I'm missing? Does it really cost this much to consider a student for admission into the program? If so NMETC may need to review their overhead costs.

Thoughts? Should I give it a shot? They accept the GI Bill so it's tempting to go with them and knock out the hands-on training at the end of the program rather than pay out-of-pocket with PERCOM and have to take 6 2-day trips to PERCOM's training sites (10 hours one way).

Also, does anyone have any experience with setting up your own clinical and ride along rotations? Do you normally have to pay for this? How difficult is it to find a site to knock out your hours in a metropolitan area like Houston or Austin? I'm asking because NMETC doesn't set those up apparently.

Thought I'd share this because it was new to me and my partners (and the emerg doc)

30's male smoked some crack. friends called for a seizure. Pt talking, confused (seemingly postictal). Pt codes as he is transferred to stretcher.

5 mins of code and an attempt to intubate is thwarted by trismus/rigor mortis?!?! no room for a king airway, couldnt get the opa in but bagged well with 2 npa's. (didnt get to cric)

asystole btw...

hospital arrival and PEA. Dr tries succs. nothing. Nurses look at us like we have a several hour old body and roll their eyes. They continue to work the code and we leave.

well here it is (wiki link..)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadaveric_spasm

"Physiological Mechanism

ATP is required to reuptake calcium into the sarcomere's sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). When a muscle is relaxed, the myosin heads are returned to their "high energy" position, ready and waiting for a binding site on the actin filament to become available. Because there is no ATP available, previously released calcium ions cannot return to the SR. These leftover calcium ions move around inside the sarcomere and may eventually find their way to a binding site on the thin filament's regulatory protein. Since the myosin head is already ready to bind, no additional ATP expenditure is required and the sarcomere contracts.

When this process occurs on a larger scale, the stiffening associated with rigor mortis can occur. It mainly occurs during high ATP use. Sometimes, cadaveric spasms can be associated with erotic asphyxiation resulting in death"

ever seen it? thoughts?

However, I'm a mere 5'3" and I have no clue as to what weight to start with when it comes to deadlifting. I have a gym membership and I usually work on the machines but I feel like actually deadlifting will help re-enforce proper body mechanics at work as well. I suck in the upper body strength department, but I'm doing good with lower body strength. I understand this varies depending on individual fitness, but can anyone give me some pointers so I don't under-do or over-do it?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...-mountain.html

It is lore in mountaineering that climbers who accidentally flip upside down in their harnesses and hang there too long eventually lose consciousness, then die if not rescued. (In the case above, hypothermia from being upside down in water overnight certainly contributed to the death.) but heated discussion at our climbing site yesterday had one ranger claiming that an upside - down climber would get 'compartment syndrome' leading to LOC and death. another thought that the increased blood flow to the brain, and increased ICP, from head being lower than heart , eventually would cause LOC. A climber 'flipping', (becoming suspended upside down, with the waist harness leg straps cutting off circulation to the legs) is an event that can occur from inattention or bad rope technique. Unfortunately, since most climbing sites are wilderness locations, rescue may be hours away.

what are your thoughts on the pathophysiology of what is going on when a climber is upside-down for a long time, say longer than 1/2 hour?

I just got my emt and nremt finished and trying to get out there and apply for jobs but you need a resume. I haven't made a resume for medical at all and I don't have any experience in the medical field. Next, I was wondering if anyone had a good template for a new emt with no experience and just a resume template for emt. I have looked online for a great while and couldn't find a resume template for a no experience emt. and I am lost on what to put under experience since I have none. Please help.

I honestly had no idea I was this popular with the ladies, but in the last month I have had three patients (I frequent flyer, and 2 5150s) add me on Facebook. Has anyone had any issues with this? It is weird because I work 2 hours away from home, and I don't advertise where I live, that and I don't go out and tell the world my last name.

I took care of the frequent flyer, I told her that my Facebook is really just a way to keep connected with family, and that it would be unprofessional to add patients.

Should I be concerned?
