It seems a lot of calltakers in our 911 center believe that if someone is seizing or postictal, loud noises around the patient are absolutely the worst thing that could happen and will send the patient right back in to seizure or keep them seizing. Some will tell the callers on every seizure call almost immediately to keep everyone around the pt. quiet or else they will keep seizing or start seizing again.

I even got my butt chewed a little for taking a seizure call and telling them the whole protect their head, don't hold them down, don't put anything in their mouth, any hx of seizure, are they breathing regime before instructing them to keep everyone quiet. And no, I didn't say to do that because it will make them seize.

Of course I can see why having people calm and quiet around someone who is postictal and confused is a good idea, but am I missing something here? I know some people have seizure disorders that are triggered by certain lights, sounds, even music, but really? Where is this coming from? I just think people are focusing way too much on this idea that loud noise = seizures, rather than getting in stuff that's more important first, like their breathing status and making sure people don't put stuff in their mouth.

My aunt coded twice while undergoing open heart surgery. Two consults have said she has no brain activity but apparently the family can not stop life support until a third consult. She would not want to be hooked up to LS. The third doctor was supposed to give opinion tonight and family was mentally prepared for tonight. He came and examined and said he won't give opinion until the morning. Is this normal? It just feels like they are giving false hope. The family takes this as a good sign. Keep praying god is working a miracle type stuff. I ache because I feel they are deluding themselves. Is there a reason this guy would make them wait until morning for his decision?

I just want things to be finalized one way or another. This is all yick.

I just got my notice to renew my E.M.T. Basic certification and on it it states that.

"Only certified EMS professionals who can document a minimum of 6 months active affiliation with an EMS service, may request inactive status. A certified EMS professional may not request inactive status in their initial re certification period if they have never been affiliated with an ambulance/rescue service or functioned in a patient health care setting."

I haven't been employed in the EMS field since I was certified in 2009. I was not at all aware of this requirement for NREMT. Is there anything I can do to re-cert without having to take the class over again? I come from an EMS family and I am still very confident in my E.M.T. skills.

Can anyone offer any advice or info?

I am a newly certified EMT-B in NJ and I am looking to find a career position. I know that many rescue squads and street ems do not hire a lot of new EMTs due to lack of experience, and I was told that volunteer and transport is the best way to get the experience. Now don't get me wrong, because I am willing to start at the bottom if need be, but not really what I was interested in.

My real question is how does street ems compare to transport. I have heard from a few people but I would like some more opinions. If I go the transport route, I want to be useful and do the job I was trained for. I just want to know from people who have done it, if they felt more like an emt or a glorified taxi driver.

I'm 6PM to 6AM friday-Sat and from the current projections there is a good chance that the eye of Earl may go right over me. There are definite choke points in our town subject to coastal flooding so areas may be inaccessible. I'm wondering when "scene safety" means you don't even roll out of the station!
